TV Series The War & Peace Tour

LITHUANIA -  LATVIA - RUSSIA

Leo Tolstoy`s greatest masterpiece War and Peace for 17 weeks in 2015 has been filmed in Lithuania, Latvia, and Russia. The epic novel tells about the love and loss in the lives of three young people with Russia’s war with Napoleon on the background.

The BBC series War & Peace is considered one of the most impressive and fascinating drama and has a breath gaining huge response among viewers. Now fans of epic drama of War & Peace have the opportunity not only live up with the main characters but also visit the main screen filming destinations and enjoy the aura of the story in person.

 

DAY 1: VILNIUS

Arrival from your chosen airport to Vilnius. Private transfer to a centrally located hotel. Check-in and overnight.


DAY 2: VILNIUS

Have breakfast at the hotel. Private tour to Vilnius Old Town, by visiting places, where BBC TV series War and Peace were captured.
The Moscow streets were captured at the cobbled street of Vilnius Old Town. As the most appropriate for this role was recognized Dominikonu Street. The Vilnius University complex was playing the role of Brunn -  the Austrian town, but then the old library of the university was the background for the headquarters of the Austrian general.
Gediminas Castle was filmed as Napoleon`s headquarters, but Franciscan Monastery was captured for the underground plot line. St. Nicholas or Nikolai's Church is located in the Old Town area of Vilnius and was also selected as one of the filming sites.
Overnight in Vilnius.


DAY 3: VILNIUS surroundings

Have breakfast at the hotel.
Visit the homestead of the Traku Voke Manor 12km outside of the city, which with its historical buildings and structures, park alleys, ponds, and other elements also has been appearing in War & Peace Series.
Have the private drive to Rumsiskes – the open-air Museum of Lithuania played the role as officers` quarters during the war and rustic peasant scenes. In between the wooden houses in Rumsiskes were filmed the dwelling places of the officers during the war campaign: Kutuzov’s quarters, Andrei’s quarters and a lot of the scenes where soldiers marching across Russia.
Rumsiskes` collection consists of 80 000 exponents. There are buildings, furniture, household articles, iconography materials, fences, wells, beehives, orchards, flower gardens, and other artifacts, which illustrate the way of life, work and traditions of the peasants and townspeople from different regions of Lithuania. The buildings are grouped in complexes: farmsteads, small villages, and towns. They represent the most characteristic stylistic features, planning, constructions, and decorative elements of buildings of different epochs and social strata. In some buildings, the process of some kind of work is demonstrated: making pots of clay, processing of the amber, wood, metal, and weaving.
Return in Vilnius at late afternoon and overnight in Vilnius.


DAY 4: VILNIUS – RUNDALE - RIGA

Have breakfast at the hotel. Check out and have a private transfer to Latvia and one of the main filming spots - gorgeous Rundale Palace with a rose garden and a magnificent fountain.  
The War & Peace film crew spent two weeks in Rundale, by using Palace and surroundings for different plot lines, from which the most impressive is the opening scene of the series  - Anna Pavlovna Scherer`s celebrations.
Rundale Palace built in the mid 18th century by the Italian architect  Bartolomeo Francesco Rastrelli, who was also the Russian court architect and therefore Rundale Palace ideally suited for filming. Recently renovated Gold, White and Marble halls as well as antique furniture, paintings and Board games from the country residence of the Dukes of Courland were perfect backgrounds for the movie scenes like "house Anatole Kuragino", "boudoir Helen Bezukhova" and "the bedroom, Helen” and many others.

Late afternoon arrive in Riga – the capital of Latvia. Check-in and overnight at Riga.

 

DAY 5: RIGA – SAINT PETERSBURG

Very early transfer to Riga airport for the flight Riga – St.Petersburg. Arrival in St.Petersburg in the morning.
Private transfer to the city center and visit the majestic, mint-green Winter Palace, which is now the world-famous Hermitage Museum, which is one of the largest and oldest museums in the world. The Hermitage was founded in 1764 by Catherine the Great and has been open to the public since 1852. Its collections, of which only a small part is on permanent display, comprise over three million items, including the largest collection of paintings in the world.
Transfer to hotel in the city center for rest and enjoy the city on your own.
Overnight in St.Petersburg.


DAY 6: SAINT PETERSBURG

Have breakfast at the hotel. Private tour to Pushkin/Tsarskoe Selo (35 km outside Petersburg).
The extravagance of Russia's imperial rulers can be seen at Tsarskoe Selo. The town of Pushkin which surrounds the Tsarskoe Selo estates is St. Petersburg's most charming suburb. Tsarskoe Selo is one of St. Petersburg's must-see attractions, and can easily occupy visitors for a full day. Tsarskoe Selo is surrounded by extensive landscaped gardens with diverse and fascinating decorative architecture.
Visit the gold mirrored ballroom at Catherine Palace, where Natasha Rostov first dances with Prince Andrei, the world-famous Amber Room, and the park.
On return visit Yusupov Palace, which plays the role for different Russian aristocrats everyday scenes.
Overnight in St.Petersburg.


DAY 7: SAINT PETERSBURG departure

Have breakfast at the hotel. Check out and transfer to St.Petersburg airport and departure.
