Baltic Cultural Tours

Cultural life and traditional festivals in the Baltic states are thrilling with their artistic richness, live traditions and spiritual depth. Baltic folklore, unique arts and crafts and handmade articles are the magical gems of the three Baltic nations. They are like a living code which keeps alive the spirit of the nations through the centuries and ensures continuity into the future.

Although all the Baltic states are Christian countries, pagan festivals have been celebrated trough centuries and are still alive today. The most emotional and with fascinating traditions filled celebration is summer solstice or Midsummer Festival.

An unique occasion is the Great Song and Dance Celebration, which takes place every five years in Latvia and Estonia and every four years in Lithuania and they are one of the largest amateur folkloric choral and dance events in the world, included in UNESCO as - a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

The love for opera in the Baltic states goes back to 1837 when world-famous composer Richard Wagner lived in Riga. Nowadays Latvian National Opera is known as La Scala of the North, thanks to its elegance and high class performances. While Riga and Sigulda Opera Festivals held annually have become a marvelous tradition with Latvia`s and world’s excellent opera singers.

The folkloric festival Baltica has been held since 1987 and presents enormous cultural heritage of the Baltic nations – authentic traditional songs and dances, instrumental music, narratives, applied and decorative arts and traditional crafts.

But the most elegant cultural event in Latvia is the International Early Music Festival which enchants many with outstanding masterpieces of Percel, Vivaldi, Telemann, Gluck and Handel played in churches and concert halls in Riga, Mezotne Small Castle and Rundale Palace – the most outstanding Baroque Palace in the Baltics.
